WHAT COVERAGE  WILL YOU HAVE?

Eligibility

Applicable to International  Students in Canada

At the time of application, you are eligible for coverage if:
•  You are 69 years and under at the time of application date of the Policy; and,

•  You are a full-time or part-time student enrolled in a school in Canada; and,

•  You are not travelling against a physician or other registered medical practitioner’s advice; and,

•  You have not been diagnosed with a terminal condition.

 

Applicable to Family Members of Students

At the time of application, you are eligible for coverage if:
•  You are at least 15 days old; and,

•  You are 59 years and under; and

•  You are a family member of a student who is either insured under a TuGo Student Insurance Policy for International students or meets the eligibility requirements for a TuGo Student Insurance Policy; and,

•  You are a full-time or part-time student enrolled in a school in Canada; and,

•  You are not travelling against a physician or other registered medical practitioner’s advice; and,

•  You have not been diagnosed with a terminal condition.

 

Period of coverage

Your coverage commences on  the effective date as shown on the application.
Your coverage terminates on the earliest of the following dates:
•   the expiry date indicated in the application;
•   60 days after the date you are no longer enrolled in a school within Canada .

When you are enrolled in a school, coverage will be provided during school breaks as long as your Policy is in effect during these periods.

 

Travel worldwide

Travel worldwide during the period of coverage is valid as long as the majority of the period of coverage is spent in Canada.

Visits to your home country are permitted; your Policy will not terminate, however expenses will not be covered while in your home country. Also, this policy does not cover a medical condition (and related conditions) which originated while visiting your home country during the period of coverage.

 

Refund

Full refund if prior to the effective date if student visa is denied / if entry into country is denied / if non arrival to country of study. Partial refunds are also available. No refunds are available, if claim has been or will be submitted. Consult the Policy Wording for full details.

 

Extensions. You can extend your period of coverage before your Policy expires. Some conditions apply.

Emergency Medical Treatment

Emergency means an unforeseen sickness or injury, which requires immediate medical treatment to alleviate existing danger to life or health.

• Emergency medical treatment for sickness or injury whether in-patient or out-patient care
• Services of a physician
• Services of a licensed ground, air or sea ambulance and paramedics to the nearest hospital. Taxi expenses in lieu of ambulance
• X-ray examinations and diagnostic laboratory procedures
• Prescription drugs: Limit of a 30-day supply. While you are hospitalized, the company will pay the total cost of all prescription drugs.
The cost for one morning-after pill is also provided once during a 12 consecutive month period if the insured has purchased a 365-day policy
• Rental or purchase essential medical appliances
• Up to $20,000 for private duty nursing

Follow-up Visits

Up to five follow-up visits within the 14 days after the initial emergency treatment

Eye Examination

One visit to an optometrist or ophthalmologist for a general eye examination.

Note: This benefit is available once during a 12 consecutive month period if the insured has purchased a 180-day policy

Annual physician visit

Up to $150 for one check-up or one consultation session and prescription of the 'morning after pill’ per 12 months period (if 365 days are purchased)

Maternity

Up to $25,000 if pregnancy commenced during period of coverage

Fracture Treatment

Up to a maximum of $1,000 for the treatments related to fractures.

This benefit is only available in lieu of the Airfare to Return Home for Treatment Benefit

Dental

• Up to $6,000 for dental accidents

• Up to $600 for any other dental emergencies

• Up to $150 per tooth for impacted wisdom teeth

Professional medical services

• Up to $600 per practitioner for visits to licensed physiotherapist, chiropractor, chiropodist, osteopath, acupuncturist, speech therapist, naturopath, or podiatrist.

• Up to $1,000 combined for all practitioners per incident for the services of a: Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Clinical counsellor, Psychotherapist, Nurse psychotherapist, Social worker

Mental & Emotional Condition Coverage

• Mental and emotional disorders are covered up to the Policy limit for in-patient services under the Emergency Medical Treatment benefit in the same way that any other medical emergency is covered
• Coverage is also provided for out-patient and other services under any other related benefits that could apply

Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing

• Up to a maximum of $100 for elective testing.

This benefit is available once during a 12 consecutive month period, provided the minimum term of insurance purchased is 180 days.

Prescription Glasses / Contact Lenses / Hearing Aids

Up to a maximum of $200 for prescription glasses, contact lenses and hearing aids, required as a result of an accident or injury or that required repair as a result of an accident or injury.

Repatriation

• Up to $35,000 for repatriation

Tutorial services

Up to $20/hour to a maximum of $400 for the costs of a qualified private tutorial service in the event you are hospitalized for 30 consecutive days or more.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

Air Flight/Common Carrier Accident - Maximum Limit - $10,000

24-Hour Accident - Maximum Limit of $10,000

Optional limits available (for additional premium):
• Air flight/common carrier - $100,000
• 24-hour Accident - $25,000

The following benefits are payable only when pre-approved by the insurer

Emergency Air Transportation

Up to Policy limit for medical air evacuation for return to Canada or medical air evacuation between medical facilities

Family transportation

When an insured is hospitalized, this benefit includes:

• Up to $5,000 for one round trip economy airfare or ground transportation costs for a family member or friend to be at their bedside

• Up to $400 per day to a maximum of $2,000 for out-of-pocket expenses

Airfare to Return Home for Treatment

Up to a one-way economy airfare to return to the country of permanent residence for immediate treatment*

* Treatment must be required within 10 days of returning home

Medical Attendant

The cost of a round trip economy airfare on a commercial flight for a qualified medical attendant if medically necessary.

Rehabilitation Treatment

Up to $250 per day to a maximum of 7 days for emergency treatment in a rehabilitation facility when it is medically necessary after hospitalization

 

Exclusions and Limitations

Student medical insurance does not cover everything. This insurance has exclusions, conditions and limitations. Please read them and understand the policy before you buy this insurance.

A Pre-Existing Medical Condition  exclusion may apply to a medical condition and/or symptoms that existed prior to your trip. This policy will not pay any expenses or benefits relating to a pre-existing condition that was not STABLE in 90 days prior to the effective date of the policy.

STABLE means:

• the medical condition is not worsening, and

• there has been no alteration* in any medication for the condition or its usage or dosage,

• nor any medical treatment prescribed or recommended by a physician or received,

within the period specified in this Policy before the commencement date of a covered trip.

(Alteration includes an increase or decrease in medication dosage, usage or a change in medication type, but does not include changes due solely to the availability of your usual brand or due to government regulations regarding reference-based pricing.

Some other exclusions:

• Conditions or any related conditions for which, prior to your arrival date in Canada or the country of study, testing or investigative consultation took place, was scheduled to take place or was recommended for the purpose of establishing a diagnosis (not including routine check-up or routine monitoring for a stable condition), and for which results had not yet been received at the time of departure from your home country. This includes tests, which were recommended or scheduled prior to departure, but had not yet taken place at the time of departure.

• Medical treatment or medical condition originating while visiting your home country
• Long term care or ongoing care

What to do if you need medical attention

Have your policy confirmation with you at all times. In the event of sickness or injury which may result in claim, contact Claims at TuGo at the telephone numbers shown on your policy confirmation and the Policy Wording.  When contacting Claims at TuGo, please provide your name, your policy number, your location and the nature of your emergency.

In the event of hospitalization, call Claims at TuGo immediately - it is a condition of this policy.

To apply for benefits under this policy, you will need to send a completed claim form (with all original bills attached) to Travel Underwriters. Visit Claims at TuGo for the claim form and submit your claim online.
